good news--pisgah brewery now has its package store open on thursday evenings from 4 to 9. three words: worth the trip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the brewery is on the other side of asheville, just before black mountain...again, WORTH THE TRIP. http://www.pisgahbrewing.com/index.htm
pint offerings are $3 to $5...depending on ABV. all of their offerings are STELLAR. i recommend the:
solstice - pisgah's take on a tripel belgian
vortex - triple ipa...hops, hops, and more hops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MY FAVORITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
nitro stout - really, pound for pound, one of the best beers i have ever tasted...rivals north coast old rasputin stout.
not to mention the old faithfuls: pisgah pale and pisgah porter.
they sell growlers, 750ml bottles, and of course those GLORIOUS pints!
another asheville gem: highland brewing makes some of the best beer around. take a tour on friday afternoons at 4pm. it is very educational...plus they let you sample the glorious ales they craft.
site: http://www.highlandbrewing.com/main.htm
suggestions: oatmeal porter - one of the best beers you will ever drink
kashmir ipa - very balanced (if you want a taste of paradise, try their kashmir imperial ipa if they have it. it is expensive, but it is worth every penny. if they don't have it, beg them to make it for brewgrass).
gaelic ale - a favorite go-to for many beer drinkers. also a good one to use to introduce people to great (and real) beer
Well I've been quiet lately - but I do have news! We made it out of town for a brief break to Chattanooga and while there partook (?) of the beer and fine food at Big River Grill & Brew Works (http://www.bigrivergrille.com/index.php?pg=location&sub=loc&location_id=21). The food was excellent the service fantastic and the beer above average. I have found that most brewery/restaurants tend to mild down or water up their otherwise good beers to try to appeal to the masses. I had the sampler and found the Iron Horse Stout was good, the Sweet Magnolia Brown Ale was very drinkable but the rest were a "bit like making love in a canoe" (Bonus points for identifying the quote). If you find yourself in Chattanooga, Nashville, or Lake Buena Vista (Fl) it is definitely worth a visit.
